Who must title a vehicle in Nevada?
All motor vehicles, recreational vehicles, trailers, OHVs, and motorized watercraft must be titled.
Exempt: Mopeds and special mobile equipment (owner’s option); manufactured homes titled unless converted to real property.
Who issues titles and where are applications submitted?
Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for vehicles/trailers, Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) for watercraft, Nevada Housing Division for manufactured homes.
Application: Properly endorsed title or Dealer Report of Sale (for dealer sales).
Fee: $20.00 + $8.25 processing fee (change of ownership); expedited title: +$20.00; expedited shipping: +$20.00.
Watercraft: $20.00 title fee. Manufactured homes: $60.00.
What documents are needed as proof of ownership?
New vehicles: Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin.
Used vehicles: Certificate of Title.
Non-title states: Registration certificate or certified copy of state record.
Government surplus: SF97-1.
Foreign vehicles: Foreign docs, CBP 7501, NHTSA HS-7, EPA 3520-1; Canadian vehicles require current registration and lien search from last province.
How are special titles or brands handled?
Bonded Title: Insufficient evidence of ownership requires a bond (150% of MSRP; 25% for salvage bonded); valid 3 years.
Brands: Bonded Vehicle, Flood Damage, Lemon Law Buyback, Non-Rebuildable, Non-Repairable, Non-U.S. Vehicle, Rebuilt, Reconstructed, Salvage, Specially Constructed, Total Loss, and more. Out-of-state brands carried forward (max 4 on title).
Salvage: Required for total loss (≥65% of value), flood, nonrepairable, or similar out-of-state; insurer must apply within 180 days of settlement.
Rebuilt: Authorization for Vehicle Restoration (VP209) required for vehicles ≤5 years old; must be inspected and branded before sale.
Nonrepairable: Only processed by licensed wrecker/dismantler/recycler; no fee for certificate.
How are duplicate/corrected titles handled?
Duplicate: Notarized Application for Duplicate Title (VP012), $20.00 ($35.00 if sent out of state) + $8.25 processing if ownership changes.
Watercraft: $20.00 for duplicate.
Manufactured homes: $60.00 for transfer; correction: Title Correction Affidavit (TL-103).
Other notes:
Odometer disclosure required for all transfers (exempt for 2010 or older, trailers, trucks >16,000 lbs.).
VIN/HIN inspection required for never-registered/titled vehicles, reconstructed/specially constructed, or insufficient ownership info.
Are electronic signatures accepted?
Yes, except on secure documents (titles, MSO, odometer, bills of sale); eNotary and e-signature accepted for some NDOW and Housing Division docs.
What taxes apply to vehicle purchases/registrations?
Sales Tax: 6.50% minimum state + county option; paid to dealer on purchase price.Trade-in credit allowed.
Credit for taxes paid to another state (except Utah).
Exemptions: Special Drive-Away Permit for nonresidents, private party sales (no sales tax), certain government/tribal/veteran exemptions.
Other taxes/fees:
Governmental Services Tax: 4.0% of depreciated DMV valuation (based on 35% MSRP, depreciated annually); minimum $16.00 ($3.00 for small trailers).
Supplemental Governmental Services Tax: 1.0% in Clark/Churchill counties.
Property Tax: On manufactured homes (registered with County Assessor).
Heavy Vehicle Use Tax: Proof required for vehicles ≥55,000 lbs.
How are liens recorded and perfected?
All business lienholders must participate in ELT (Electronic Lien & Title); ELT number required.
Only one lienholder per title.
Title fee applies; paper titles submitted for first lien, then held electronically.
How are liens released or assigned?
Release electronically within 15 days of satisfaction; clear title issued to owner.
Assignment: Release lien, owner signs as seller and buyer, new lienholder submits title to DMV/NDOW.
How does repossession work in Nevada?
Lienholder may repossess without judicial process if peaceful; must verbally notify law enforcement if owner is unaware.
Written notice to owner required 10 days before sale.
To obtain title, submit notarized Repossession Affidavit (VP020) with released title.
Lienholder may assign title directly to new owner with repo affidavit and transfer docs.

Lien sales: Wreckers/tow companies/storage may process lien sale after owner notification and public auction; forms and notice requirements apply.
